Dense belt of Cypress
Photograph and research results provided
by Dr Rod Bird of the Department of Natural Resources and
Environment, Hamilton Victoria.
Single row belts of introduced cypress (particularly Cypressus
macrocarpa) are common in southern Victoria. If fenced from
stock, the foliage can remain dense right to the ground. As
shown, wind speeds begin falling well before winds reach the
belt and continue to fall out to around five times the height
of the trees. The dense belt reduces wind speed more than
open pine or eucalypt belts, with the lowest speed just 30%
of open wind speed. The wind does not return to its normal
speed until more than 300m from the trees.
