Recovery

Sawn recovery is the output of timber products of particular grades produced from a log, as a percentage of log volume. The difficulties in producing useful timber dimensions from round logs, and waste due to product-related defects, mean sawn recovery rates can vary widely. For products that require a high proportion of heartwood or clearwood, recoveries from small diameter or defective logs may be as low as 10–15 per cent. When softwoods are sawn for structural timber, the presence of sapwood, small knots or other non-structural defects is not as important. In these cases, larger diameter softwoods can yield recoveries as high as 60 per cent.
